Are You On The Internet?

You read and hear it all the time. "You've got to get a website." Is it true? Yes in most cases, however there are some businesses that don't need one.

It's probably safe to say that most large businesses have a website. Small businesses haven't been as fast to develop an online strategy. It's now at the point that if you haven't at least considered the need for a website then you haven't been optimising your business. Note that I said you only have to have considered one. Not all businesses will benefit from a website.

So what type of business should have a website? If you're looking to increase your client base, move into a new market, operate in a large geographic area, sell goods or services that can be distributed electronically, or wish to increase interaction with your clients, then you should have a website. You don't have to spend thousands of dollars on your first website. The best piece of advice is to start small. Don't try and do everything the first time around. The nature of a website is that it is dynamic and you can learn what works and what doesn't.

Some of the goals of your website should be:

  • Help potential clients find your contact details, be it your office or telephone number,
  • Let your potential and existing client know what products or services you offer,
  • Sell your products or services online, and
  • Keep your market updated on events that may affect them.
You may not wish to cover all of the above immediately. You can start with just a one page website that gives your business name, contact details, hours of operation and a brief description of your services which encourages readers to contact you for further details. This is best suited to a business that's just looking to expand its services to its local clients.

Want to increase your marketing efforts further? Expand on the above by giving greater detail about the backgound of your business, the products and services you provide, advice columns, an online shop, customer surveys, and contests. These are only a few examples. Just make sure that you're providing things people need and give them a reason to come back. Change the content regularly, that's the beauty of the internet. It's cost effective to provide information to your target market.

Now, if you have all the clients you can handle, don't want to do anymore work and are competely satisfied with the way your business is operating then a website is not a necessity. Another reason is if you are sure your potential and current clients don't use the internet, then why bother. Obviously the justification for this reason is reducing daily as more and more people access the internet. Maybe you should play it safe and at least register your business name as a domain name. The cost is negligible and it may save a lot of money down the track if you do decide to create a website. The added benefit is if you need at least email then you can have a meaningful email address such as you@yourbusiness.com.
